Cover Letter & Selection Criteria

The Selection Criteria is often expressed as “Essential Criteria” and “Desirable Criteria” – this is the employer describing what they need and what they want in an applicant. So often jobseekers spend a lot of time and effort on their resume and then completely overlook the selection criteria. The resume is about you. Addressing the Selection Criteria shows the employer that you understand their needs and can demonstrate how your qualifications, experience, skills, knowledge and personal qualities match their needs. Take care to identify specific things that you have done to meet the requirements – if you don’t have work experience, use examples from school, family, sport or your interests.

Your Covering Letter should always be typed and contain no errors – check and check again!
You are trying to convince the employer to invite you to an interview.
