Making Career Choices
There are many resources to assist you in your decision, please see the links on the right.
The Year 12 What Next Guide which you can download here is also very good.
What’s important to remember is :
- It’s YOUR decision
- Expect to have several different careers over your life
- Expose yourself to as many different workplaces and people as you can. Ask everybody about what they do and how they got there.
- You can change your mind.
- Think about what you enjoy doing and what you really DON’T enjoy doing.
- Get help from careers advisers, the internet, employers, everyone you know.
- Think beyond your interests think about what you’re like. Do you like being indoors/outdoors? Do you like responsibility? Do you mind working at night or weekends? Do you like working in a team or alone? Do you like doing or thinking tasks? Do you like spending a lot of time on the phone or on the computer or working with your hands? What rewards you best? Is it important that you feel you have done some good? Do you want to make lots of money? Are you competitive? Do you need to express your creativity? Are you prepared to study? Do you like a quiet environment or prefer lots of buzz going on?
- Once you have identified a possible career choice write own a plan. How are you going to achieve your goal will you study full-time or part-time? If you study part-time, what type of work can you do to supplement your study to build up experience in the field.
